No , there is no way to make the vulva larger. Usually with age the sows will get a little better. Normally a breeding gilt with a big vulva is preferred but do not get to hung up on this because most of the times the sows still do well.

I had a gilt that had a vulva too small and I thought I was going to have to cut her. I had to go out of town for a while told my daughters to watch her and if they had to, cut her. They said that in the morning when they woke up she had eight very healthy babies and she has turned out to be a great mother so just make sure that your days are accurate and let nature take its course.

look for a smaller framed boar ? but she should be ok i had a gilt last year to be exact with the same problem and she had a litter of 16 real good and easy ? nature takes its place? but a real good breeding gilt you should look for a big sized vulva i've eveen heared the judges in the breeeding shows talk about there vulva not being a good size ..etc.. but for future refrence next time try looking for a gilt with a bigger vulva to be a great breeding gilt?

If it can be avoided stay away from gilts with small vulva I was told once that "it is a gamble that you dont want to take because if you get it wrong its like shooting yourself in the foot". However if that is what you have to work with and you believe she is worth the risk go for it. I wouldnt go out and spend a lot on semen either. If their is a local boar that is fair to you. Try that at least for its first litter then the second time around you should be able to use something better. Like I said my sow has really impressed me but she was also bred to the boar that I recently sold. Out of the bunch I will be keeping one boar for sure and my daughter wants one of the gilts. So far from what I can tell they all came out better than their parents all of their strengths and none of their weeknesses. Good luck remember no one get known for being safe and all this is, is one big gamble.

We have some gilts with small vulvas, and they usually get along farrowing just fine.
